The Jacobite movement attracted supporters from all sections of society, including a number of criminal gangs, and the practitioners of all forms of Jacobite protest have been seen collectively as a ‘subculture’. In 17 armed rebellions were mounted by Jacobites in England and Scotland with the assistance of troops from France and Spain, but Jacobite activity was not limited to military action. ![]() Overseas, unemployed sailors were turning in large numbers to piracy while, at home, the peace of the realm was threatened by the growing popularity of Jacobitism. The years between 17 saw the British Government alarmed by the rise of two phenomena.
